Hertzian Contact Theory

This is a

Maxwell Clamp.

It is a three V-Groove coupler and constrains exactly 6 DOF. No more, no less.

Force vectors intersect the coupling plane at 45 degrees

Hertzian pressure was calculated

and validated with finite element analysis to ensure optimization within design factor limits.

The design was modified several times until the contact surfaces were small and polished. The final prototype offers repeatability and rigidity. The stability achieved under the load of a weak spring feels unnatural when manipulated in the hands.
